Ultram Side Effects, Overuse

Indicators of Ultram dependency and overuse include:

  • Disinterest, lack of enjoyment
  • Indifference, lack of drive
  • Emotional or sexual apathy
  • Poor work performance
  • Detachment from others
  • Fear of dosage rupture

Many patients contact us because of adverse Ultram side effects from prolonged intake, or those of other pain-relievers.

Ultram Side Effects

Ultram side effects are common to those of opioids:

  • Agitation
  • Bloating and gas
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness, head rush (orthostatic hypotension)
  • Drowsiness (somnolence)
  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling of elation
  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Weakness

Seek urgent medical attention if the above symptoms persist and become bothersome, or in the event of severe contraindicated reactions:

  • Seizure
  • Anxiety
  • Convulsive movements
  • Hallucinations
  • Nervousness
  • Tremor

Seek emergency help for dangerous Ultram side effects associated with allergic reaction:

  • Airway constriction (bronchospasm) and wheezing
  • Airway obstruction (angioedema)
  • Convulsions
  • Coma, unconsciousness
  • Chest pain
  • Fatal epidermis cell death (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Fainting

  • irregular heartbeat
  • Itching (pruritus), rash
  • Incoordination
  • Muscle stiffness or tremor

  • Lightheadedness
  • Pinpointed pupils
  • Tightness in chest
  • Seizures
  • Severe sleepiness
  • Swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue
  • Vomiting

The risk of convulsions may increase in patients with a history of:

  •  Alcohol withdrawal
  • Central nervous system infections
  • Drug withdrawal
  • Epilepsy
  • Head trauma
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Seizures

Avoid Ultram if you take the anti-seizure medication Tegretol.

Ultram side effects will more likely occur if phase-in steps of gradual administration are skipped to accelerate rapid pain relief.

Always check with your doctor before combining Ultram ® with other medications.  The effects of either medication could be drastically altered, especially when taken with SSRI inhibitors (serotonin-boosting antidepressants such as Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft).

Ultram ® will add to the effects of alcohol and other central nervous system (CNS) depressants (such as antihistamines, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, barbiturates, and painkillers). Contraindications for Ultram match those for opioid drugs, and may cause acute intoxication when combined with:

  • Alcohol
  • Hypnotics
  • Narcotics
  • Centrally acting analgesics
  • Opioids
  • Psychotropic drugs

With Ultram use during pregnancy, reports show serious harm to developing babies. Inform your doctor immediately of any plans to become pregnant, and discontinue breastfeeding since Ultram ® can be transmitted through mother’s milk.
